How to Furnish Your Home For First Time Home Buyers

Figuring out how to decorate a brand new home for the very first time can be daunting. Keep these essential interior design tips in mind before you jump in and redo your home from top to bottom.

Furnishing your home as a first time home buyer can be overwhelming. All of a sudden you find yourself with a lot more space and nothing to fill it with. As much as we would all love to have an Instagram worthy home immediately chances are that you've just spent the bulk of your savings on a rather large downpayment for your new pad. That translates to NOT being able to purchase all new furnishings. Plus, you may be blending two households or coming from a small apartment so you will need to take a proper assessment and inventory of all your current furnishings in order to figure out what do you really need.

To do this, sit down and take a long, hard look at everything you own. Start with staple pieces of furniture and then move on to smaller items like textiles and accessories. Evaluate each item based on its usefulness, condition and whether or not it fits your sense of personal style. Make a list and separate the pieces into one of three categories: Keep, Unsure and Donate/Discard.  After you've decided what you think you want to keep, do a sketch diagram or even a list of the furnishings you want to keep for each room. And remember that you may want to change up and separate some of the furniture that you have currently and place in different areas, so these pieces might feel fresh and new in a different space. The goal here is to think about new uses for current pieces, then the extra money can go towards new furnishings that you know you will need. But if something truly doesn't fit in your new space, definitely consider letting it go.

The next step is to rank new purchases in order of priority. Again, the idea is to save money since buying a home is such a big expense. Of course you will want to make sure that all your basic staple pieces are covered, like beds and sofas and dining table, etc. And maybe these staples you already have and are bringing with you, which is great. On the other hand maybe these pieces are in the "keep" pile but really you would like to repurchase to upgrade the style, color etc. Whatever the case, just know that you don't have to have the perfectly designed house immediately upon the first day you move in. It's totally OKAY to save, plan and prioritize your home purchases!
